John Henderson
Vice President & Counsel
John joined Sovereign’s Bermuda-based team in late 2016. He has over 25 years of experience in political risk insurance and cross-border finance, most recently at the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), the political risk and credit insurance arm of the World Bank. He is a seasoned negotiator with well-developed credit skills, having represented lenders and political risk insurers on dozens of large restructurings, workouts, and bankruptcies. He has expertise structuring, negotiating, drafting, and closing complex credit and political risk cover for large commercial banks and private equity firms.
John began his career in the Office of the General Counsel at the Export-Import Bank of the United States working on cross-border aircraft and project finance transactions. After six years, he was named an Assistant General Counsel, and in 1998 he moved into a commercial role serving as Managing Director for US Ex-Im Bank’s $7 billion portfolio of restructurings and workouts in Southeast Asia following the Asian financial crisis.
In 2000, John accepted a partnership at a Washington, D.C. law firm representing finance companies, commercial banks, and international political risk insurers on a variety of export finance, ship finance and syndicated debt financings. In 2006 he joined Oxford Finance LLC, a specialty finance company, as Vice President & General Counsel.
John graduated from Lake Forest College with a B.A. in political science and obtained his J.D. from the Washington College of Law at American University in Washington, D.C. He is admitted to practice in Washington, D.C. and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
