Sophie Demeyer
Vice President – Senior Underwriter
Sophie joined the Sovereign team in Bermuda in October 2008 as an underwriter responsible for a portfolio of trading and banking clients. She moved to the UK in January 2013, the first Sovereign team member to be based in London, joining Chubb Bermuda’s International Division. In addition to representing Sovereign in the London market at client, broker and other marketing meetings and events, Sophie continues to underwrite transactions for several of longstanding Sovereign clients, with a focus on trading companies and commercial banks active in the trade, export finance and project finance areas. She also provides internal legal, regulatory, compliance and underwriting support.
Sophie came to Sovereign from a 13-year career in banking, including seven years as a Senior Manager in Fortis Bank’s Global Export and Project Finance group in Brussels. In this role, Sophie was involved in the structuring of project finance and buyer credit transactions in emerging markets with the participation of Multilateral Development Banks, Export Credit Agencies, and the private political risk insurance market. During this time, she had a key role in developing Fortis Bank’s relationship with the private insurance market and its use of the PRI product.
Sophie has a Law Degree and a Postgraduate Degree in International Relations from the University of Leuven in Belgium, as well as a Master of Law Degree from the University of London, King’s College. She is fluent in Dutch, English and French.
